MIDTOWN. A location near Piedmont Park, floor-to-ceiling windows looking out on 10th Street, and a friendly, casual vibe distinguish this neighborhood bar, whose clientele is largely gay. For many years, Blake's has been a top place to socialize, have a drink, and check out other attractive patrons before heading to late-night dance clubs. Shaking up the regular goings-on are frequent drag performances. Although guys of all ages are welcome, most of them fall into the 20s to 30s range. NB The menu features breakfast eats all day as well as downhome ditties like fried pickles and tater tots.

BUCKHEAD. Boasting a Western theme and some of the best beer prices in Buckhead, the Saloon gets packed on weekends with everybody from college students to those wishing they were. Among stuffed fish and animal heads and various and sundry frontier oddities, the Eddie Bauer-types down their favorite brews and search out new friendships. If the crowd at the main bar generates too much heat for you, head through the hole in the wall to the covered patio, where you'll likely find a live acoustic act, a little fresh air, and, yes, another bar.

BUCKHEAD. This trendy, artsy establishment is popular for dinner but is also a frequent jumping-off point for a rowdy evening out. The well-dressed, young crowd comes in for mixed drinks and appetizers, and the spacious rooms fill up early. Walls are covered with unique portraits and colorful pieces from local artists, some of whom paint right in the middle of the hubbub. Entertainment, including dancers and singers, spices up the place most nights of the week.

KENNESAW. Located off the beaten path, this country music concert hall offers an enormous dance floor with cowboy dancing, two-stepping and live bands Friday and Saturday nights.

DOWNTOWN. Set in the lower part of a former warehouse, this eminently appealing place has been pleasing patrons since 1981. Its dim, well-loved interior boasts leather furniture and a substantial bar, where regulars hang out after the work day's done. During the day, a menu of light fare is available, and appetizers are standard at night. Old-school drinks (especially martinis) are a source of great delight to patrons, and beer, wine, and liqueurs can also be had. Plus, there's live music ­ mostly jazz ­ offered nightly. A great, laid-back destination.
